ELL Proficiency Standards
The population of English language learner(ELL) studentsin schools has grown tremendouslyover the past few years, with statistics indicating that 20% of the school-age populationin Americais coming from homes where a language other than English is used. It makes itcritical that the components necessary to decreasethe language barriers,which can negatively affect students’daily performance, be analyzed and modified.
To face this increase in ELL students and their need to recognize their educational needs, the United states Department of education required that all states develop English language proficiency standards for English language learners (Arizona Department of Education, 2007).Therefore the Arizona department of education’s office of English language Acquisition services, created the ELP standards (language proficiency standards), these standards target the ELL students and measure their English language proficiency. Teachers are to utilize these standards to create instructions that could increase English language fluency in classrooms.
Also TESOL (Teachers of English for Speakers of Other Languages) was found to help teachers help their ELL students, to advance professional expertise in English language teaching and learning for speakers of other languages worldwide.The TESOL has core values of responsiveness, quality, collaboration, and integrity.
The academic content standards explain all the knowledge and skills that students should gain in a school year.
