“Heaven and Bliss” by Jesper Just is a film which is probably thought strange by many. The plot begins with a young man wandering seemingly with a purpose through a field. The young man then spots a truck at a power station where he observes a burly man step out and disappears into the trailer. The young man, unseen, curiously follows. Once inside, he is magically transported to an auditorium where the truck driver has taken center stage dressed in a wig and a silk scarf. The performer belts out a love song while the young man is enticed throughout and breaks into applause at the end as the performer crumples to the ground. The film in general is different than typical films we see as it is void of any dialogue yet produced in the same fashion as a feature film.
The film, “Heaven and Bliss” seems to revolve around themes of identity, sexuality, and social roles and relationships. Because of the way this film appears to reflect some institutions as well as society in general, it will be analyzed using sociological criticism (Berger, 2008, 149). This criticism allows the film to be studied in terms of what it reveals about society; in this case, the view of sexuality male roles in society. The characters in the work seem to be experimenting or searching for their identity or role within society. The tension between the two protagonists’ seems to emphasize some sort of relationship and may even symbolize a sort of father- son connection. This view is held because research shows that Jesper Just refers to the video as a representation of the fear a son has of losing his father (Just, 2008). This brings to mind the lessening in the roles of father figures in today’s society who are mostly deprived of their traditional roles or absent from the social structure. I believe that in general, Jesper Just created this film to explore gender roles and the way in which cultures generate and understand them.
