The steady incline of bullying in American school systems can be directly linked to the climate, expectations, and organization in a student’s home life as well as inside the classroom., Schools play a vastly important role in structuring the nature of adolescence in modern society; therefore, it is important for institutions to foster an environment that is committed to individual growth—not only academically but socially as well. Several studies have shown the same criterion that’s needed to bring out the best in students at home is the same that’s needed in schools, which is supportive and demanding teachers and parents. According to the article students that bullies often have poor social skills and poor social judgment. These are traits that are fostered by home and school environments.
Generally, students who bully are looking for a means of escape. This could be an escape from the stress they’re feeling as a result of an unfulfilling home or school life. If grades are poor and they’re not getting the proper support from teachers, or parents are not proactively involved in their academic achievement, taking their frustrations out on someone else can be used as a form of escapism. Included in the article is a section that includes bullying survival tips. One of the tips suggests that it may be a good idea to talk to a teacher, guidance counselor, or someone who can provide the support that is needed. Well, if you’re in a subpar school, where you don’t feel comfortable with the guidance counselors or your teachers are not responsive, attentive and or demand the very best from you, then you may be left to figure it out for yourself, which is unhealthy, and adds to the growing rate of bullying related suicide. Most of the approaches to eradicate school violence, the zero tolerance approach for example, which responds excessively to the first infraction, has not been very effective.
