Chronotype and the optimal time of day for performance on an implicit memory task were investigated. Participants were 6 male and 31 female n= 37 undergraduate psychology students ranging in age from 18 to 54 years, participating in the experiment for academic assessment purposes. Participants completed the Composite Scale of Morningness self-report questionnaire to establish their chronotype. Participants then completed a star mirror tracing task to investigate their performance (speed and accuracy) on retrieval of implicit memory. Results indicated a significant positive correlation between morning types and worse performance, which did not support our hypothesis.

It is well established that human beings operate under the influence of circadian rhythms, a normally 24hr cycle, which is affected by a wide range of physiological, biochemical and psychological parameters. (Tankova,I., Adan,A.,& Buela-Casal,G.,1994;Smith,C., Reilly,C.,& Midkiff,K.,1989;Schmidt,C.,Collete,F., Cajochen,C.,& Peigneux,P.,2007). Biological variables were first observed by Klietman, who found evidence of a relationship between circadian rhythm in core body temperature and a time of day effect in performance.(Klietman,N., Titelbaum,S.,& Feiveson, P.,1937). They found that there was a diurnal variation dependent upon core body temperature that effects reaction time in performance, with best performance occurring in the afternoon and poorest early in the morning and late at night.
