The Value of College
“Education is the best investment you can make”- it always has an important standing in the society since many years ago to present time. Completing a college education fifty years ago posed quite a challenge. By that time, not too many people had a chance to commit to a college degree. Therefore, college is something that was considered a novelty. Nowadays, with the wide range of schooling systems, the society has changed; education is not something that is privileged or as hard to reach anymore. The job market has changed in the way that favors college degree or even higher education. Therefore, higher education has become necessary to reach out into the job market. People can become college graduates if they want to and devote themselves towards it. I have read the article “Don’t Send Your Kids to College” and “8 Alternatives to College”, written by James Altucher. The author, who has high education with a bachelor and master’s degree, persuades kids not to go to college. These articles raised a big question about the value of college. What is its real value? Is it worth it to achieve a college degree? This is a complex because college education has its pro and cons. But overall, the positive aspects of college outweigh its unfavorable aspects.
The most obvious negative aspect of college is tuition. College costs have dramatically increased over the last few decades. College tuition fees have been rising even faster than inflation. “Since 1978, cost of living has gone up three-fold. Medical cost, […], has gone up six-fold. And college tuition has gone up a whopping tenfold” (Altucher 1). It’s impressive to compare college costs and inflation to see its surprising high tuition fees. An average graduated student spends about $104,000 for a four year college and leaves school with about $23,000 in debt (Altucher).
