Report to Wordsworth by Boey Kim Cheng is a poem mainly talking about the slow death of nature and also how selfish and never satisfied man is the reason for this downfall. The poet shows a lot of sorrow and sadness towards the death of nature and also trying to show that there is no hope left for nature, for man ‘’moves in for the kill’’ as she says trying to show that man is well aware of what is happening and thus there is no hope left for nature.
As the poet is trying to convey the message of nature’s failure to live she uses a lot of human characteristics and naming towards nature, for example when she says ‘’she has been laid. Smothered by smog,’’ in this sentence she refers to nature as ‘she’ showing that nature also has feelings like humans do, another example is, ‘‘as Nature’s mighty heart is lying still’’ this is when nature Is slowly dying and by that sentence she is uses human characteristics but also to show us that all the pain that man has inflicted on nature has destroyed and killed it. In this poem the author uses a lot of imagery which is in a way was necessary, for example ‘’O see the wound widening in the sky,’’ The image she is showing us the result of man’s actions.
The poet talks about nature but hints at wider meaning for example ‘’….Triton’s notes struggle to be free,’’ Triton is a sea-god that uses shells as instruments, so in this sentence she is being comparative by telling us that the struggle that nature is going through is also affecting different parts of nature like the sea which also hurts Triton ‘’a sea-god’’ she is comparing both pains results brought on by the kill of nature. Another strong example is when the poet says ‘’and Neptune lies helpless as a beached whale,’’ the greater meaning in this is that nature is slowly losing breath and dying because ‘Neptune’ is a sea-god who obviously lives in the water but when brought on shore is helpless also like whale and that is where the comparison comes from, so mainly...
