What are bones, what do they do, what can they do, and what can they tell us?
What are bones?
Bones are the skeleton of an animal, which includes humans and non-humans. Bones are made of Calcium, Chromium, Potassium, Selenium, Manganese, Silica, Iron, Zinc, Boron, Phosphorus, Sulfur, Magnesium, and several other vitamins and minerals. Bones contain more Calcium than any other organ. Bones are positioned within the soft tissues and muscles. This provides the support and structure for the entire body. The primary tissue of bone, Osseous tissue, is a relatively hard but lightweight. This is formed mostly of Calcium Phosphate. While bone is mainly brittle, it does have a considerable amount of elasticity, contributed largely by collagen.
There are two types of bone tissue: compact bone which is the outer layer and spongy bone that is the inner layer. Compact bone consists of tightly packed osteons. Osteons are passageways in which the course of a central blood vessel flows. Spongy bone is lighter and less dense than compact bone.
The bones of the body come in a variety of sizes and shapes. The five principal types of bones are long, short, flat, irregular and sesamoid.

Long bones are characterized by a shaft that is much larger in length than in width. They are comprised mostly of compact bone and smaller amounts of marrow, which is located in the spongy bone. Most bones of the limbs, including those of the fingers and toes, are long bones. The exceptions are those of the wrist, ankle and kneecap.

Short bones are generally cube shaped, and have a thin layer of compact bone surrounding a spongy interior. The bones of the wrist and ankle are short bones.
