DIABETIC MEAL PLAN
TEST BLOOD as soon as you wake up. If blood sugar is below 4, eat first and then take Insulin; if above 7, give Insulin first. Take tablets half way during breakfast.
Breakfast - 6.30 - 7.30 am
Milk- ½ pt of 1% or 2% milk or skim milk with Cereal.
Herb tea (1 cup) - Bay leaf, ginger, light peppermint, milo, ovaltine or green tea.
Cereal - wheat bran, Oatflakes or Cream of wheat with milk and Splenda, if necessary. (one small bowl)
1 Boiled egg or 1 scrambled egg
Or 2 thin slices ham, luncheon meat or cheese or 1 tin Tuna in water
Note- If you are taking cereal, do not take any bread or biscuits. Only the cereal and protein go together. If you are taking tea, you can use any type of protein from the list above and in the amounts listed, plus 2 slices of whole wheat bread, lightly buttered with sunflower margarine or health spread.
Mid-morning - 10.00 - 10.30 am
1glass mauby, ginger beer, apple juice, lemonade or any unsweetened juice. (Plain soda can be added to these to create a fizz. ) DO NOT drink soft drinks. Drink lots of water. In addition, you can have 2 eclipse / soda biscuits or 4 small crackers. A fruit of your choice e.g. apple, a small banana or pear, etc. You can eat any amount of watermelon.
Lunch- 12.30 - 1.30 pm
Try to eat mainly white meat e.g. chicken or fish. If you must eat pork or beef, just a small portion and not very often. Take the fat from all meats.
3 ice cream scoops or 2 level pot spoons of carbohydrates e.g. rice, pasta, potatoes, cou-cou or ground food. Make sure that you eat at least three of the following vegetables with at least two of your meals: green beans, broccoli, corn, tomatoes, cucumber, lettuce and carrots. ( N.B. Carrots are sweet so eat them sparingly.)
For dessert you can have 1 scoop of diabetic ice cream or jello or a thin slice of cake sweetened with Splenda.
3.00 - 3.30 p.m.
Have a drink, hot or cold and 2 whole wheat crackers.
Supper - 5.30 - 6-30 pm
