The Dimensions of Cultural Diversity
Identify and briefly explain the dimensions by referencing both textbooks
Harvey & Allard (2009) believe diversity is “the ways in which people differ that may affect their organizational experience in terms of performance, motivation, communication, and inclusion” (p. 1). These authors describe how society is accepting the differences of people and using this to improve every aspect of the workplace. According to Schaefer (2011), there are four types of groups, which describe the dimensions of cultural diversity. The racial group focuses on the physical differences, such as hair, eye, and skin color. The religious group categorizes people based on their different religions. The ethnic groups focus on the person's cultural background and origin whereas the last group focuses on a person's gender. There are other dimensions, which can include sexual orientation, age, health, and education.
The difference between diversity and inclusion
Diversity focuses on the differences that exist between people. These differences can include age, gender, sexual orientation, education, religion, race, and many others. Diversity allows people to encourage and appreciate those differences. Inclusion focuses on the behaviors that allow every person to be included and welcomed in the organization. According to Giovannini (2004), inclusion allows people to feel valued and respected while supporting every level of a diverse working environment. A corporation can appreciate diversity but may not have an inclusive environment. Organizations want every employee to feel valued, appreciated, and respected. An inclusive environment embraces the differences of everyone and shows this through actions. Although diversity describes the differences, inclusion describes how the differences are brought together.
