Running Head: DONABEDIAN’S SPO MODEL OF HEALTH CARE QUALITY
Donabedian’s SPO Model of Health Care Quality on Asthmatic Health Care
SOP Model in Pediatric Asthma Care
Research on measures of health care quality frequently cites the Avedis Donabedian’s structure/process/outcome (SPO) model (as cited in Zinn & Morr, 1997). Donabedian further made distinctions between two types of outcomes. Firstly, technical outcomes which include physical and functional aspects of care and secondly, interpersonal outcomes include elements of the ‘art’ of medicine (Zinn & Morr, 1997).
The specific episode of health care service that will be scrutinized using the Donabedian’s SPO model is the service for pediatric asthmatic care. Research has indicated that by 2005, there was 8 percent occurrences of asthma in the United States; 9 percent in children younger than 18 years old and an estimate of 5 percent of children had experienced an asthma attack (Pollart et al., 2011). However, there has been a drop in asthma related hospitalization rates since 1985, which might be due to change in emergency room management practices (Vollmer et al., 1993). The episode examined will be defined by a collection of encounters: emergency room visit: time taken to check in patient, interaction between patient and practitioner, staff number, bed, etc.
In order for proper Asthmatic health care to be given a orderly structure should be in place. In order to provide best quality care for pediatrics with asthma needs the following facilities must be present:
1. Well trained doctors and nurses in asthma center as well as Emergency and Trauma Department.
2. Educational materials: leaflets, booklets, and posters
3. Peak flow meters
4. PFM recording charts
7. Bronchodilators including salbutamol and methylxanthine
8. Anti-inflammatory agents...
