Evidence Based Practice in Adult Nursing
The aim of this assignment is to critique a piece of quantitative nursing research, by identifying and commenting on the purpose and relevance of the study, the research design and the methodology employed. Firstly it will illustrate how to locate and retrieve evidence relating to the specific topic. A systematic evaluation of one research paper titled: Randomised Clinical Trial Comparing the Efficacy of Two Bandaging Regimens in the Treatment of Venous Leg Ulcers (Meyers et al, 2002) will be carried out. Initially the meaning of critique will be defined and the importance of research critique to nursing will be briefly described. Elements of a recognised framework by Cormack (2000) will be used as a guideline through the critique process.

Critique is defined by Polit et al (2000) as a careful critical appraisal of the strengths and limitations of a piece of research. They state that a written critique should serve as a guide to researchers and practitioners, and should help to advance a particular area of knowledge. The critique should also help those who are practising nursing, to decide how the findings from a study can be best incorporated into practice (Nieswiadomy, 2002). Knapp (1998) points out that if research is to provide convincing evidence on which to base practice, it must be capable of withstanding scrutiny regarding the quality and relevance of the researchers work.

A systematic comprehensive literature search was carried out using the Royal College of Nursing, Athens and Pubmed databases via the internet. It was decided to do an electronic search rather than hand searching as it is comprehensive, quick and can access one particular material that may not be in a particular library. It is a more structured method of finding relevant information. Blackwell Synergy, Ingenta Connect and Evidence Based Nursing located many relevant articles.
