Final Project: Psychological Disorder Analysis
This paper will be an analysis of Marla, a 42-year-old Hispanic female. She has come to the clinic expressing symptoms of problems with sleep, a feeling of nervousness, and an inability to concentrate. Although the précis is short and lacks numerous minutiae, my initial impression is Marla may be suffering Dysthymia disorder. According to Kohn (2007), if the symptoms Marla is suffering have been present two or more years, she may have Dysthymia disorder. Conversely, Marla may have a major depression, as the symptoms are quite similar in both disorders.
Differentiating between Dysthymia disorder and Major Depression, the psychologist must use the guidelines established by The Diagnostic and Statistical Manual IV (DSM-IV), which states; to diagnose a major depression, the patient must display at least five specific symptoms; depression daily, no interest enjoyable activities, loss of increase of appetite, guilt feelings, and suicidal thoughts (Kohn, 2007). In comparison, a chronic, mild form of depression, extending over a two-year period with the presence of two of the following symptoms; insomnia, low self-esteem, diminished concentration, appetite issues, or hopelessness, is the disorder known as Dysthymic disorder or Dysthymia (Mayo Clinic, 2010).
We shall proceed with interviewing Marla, and inquiring about her life to obtain a clearer picture of the basis of her problem, and various symptoms. The ultimate goal of the psychologist in the first interview is to obtain a general idea of exactly what problem has brought this person to the office. Because each client is an individual with unique problems, a psychologist cannot ask the same questions of each person.
