Great American Music
When thinking of rock music, a common image is a leather clad, long-haired, tattooed head-banger. Fast-repetitive riffs, thundering drums, and sometimes screaming blare from the speakers of a rocker. Sharply dressed, quiet, and cool, that is the ideal jazz player. Minor and diminished chords, technical sax, and a raspy voice echo through the club. Two very different styles with very few common fans, rock and jazz couldn’t be any more different. Or could they?
Rock originated in the 1950’s with artists like Chuck berry and Elvis Presley. Many of its followers have been singled out throughout its history as undesirable. I t has often been popular among the the youth and sticks to its followers as they age. Rock is more structured than jazz. It often follows a verse-chorus pattern and features a little more strict instrumentation. It usually consists of a guitarist, vocalist, drummer, and bassist. It can be considered easier listening when compared to jazz. Rock has spawned many sub-genres since its birth including, punk, metal, hard rock, alternative, and grunge. Each is very different but contains characteristics that definitely identify them as rock.
Jazz came into being about a century ago. It originated in southern America and can be traced back to European and slave music. Jazz is in my opinion, more free compared to rock. Its melodies vary tremendously from piece to piece and artist to artist. Jazz involves a lot more improvisation and technical skill than rock. It has a much greater instrument diversity when compared to rock. It utilizes any instruments that the artists can make sound great together. Its complexity makes it a little harder for anyone to enjoy compared to rock as the skills of jazz artists do not appeal to as many. Vocals are less existent in jazz and focus is more on the instruments. Jazz is a very general term as many genres like, bebop, swing, smooth, and blues, as well as many others, can all be considered jazz....
