Parents Beliefs about Children and Gun Safety
The article is about parents with guns in their house. There are more than 400 children die annually in the United States and over 300 sustain non-fatal injuries each year. 22 percent of parents have a firearm in their home and 85 percent do not practice safe gun storage. Parents do not store their guns safe. 61 percent of parents said that there firearms where not locked up. 25 percent of 3 to 4 years old, 70 percent of 5 to 6 years old, and 90 percent of 7 to 8 year olds can pull the trigger. It only takes 5 to 10 pounds of pressure to pull the trigger. 61 percent of parents did not believe that children should not attend gun handling courses.
The most interesting points to this article are how many kids get killed a year from parents mistakes and stupidity. Parents should teach their child about gun safety and parents should take a course on how to teach their kids on it or don’t have a gun in the house.
The article has affected me as a teacher because kids don’t know about gun safety. It only takes a little bit to pull the trigger. Parents just leave the gun out in kids reach so a kid can come by and take it and shot them or someone else. When I was little, I knew about gun safety because my dad had them and they were locked up. We knew not to touch them and what it would do to you. I wouldn’t even bring this topic up in my daycare because parents might get mad and some don’t want their kids to know about guns. Guns are a touchy topic because if I was a parent I would tell my kids about guns when they are ready.
