Harris County is located in Houston-Sugarland-Baytown metropolitan area in the state of Texas, and is one of the fifth largest Metropolitan areas in the United States according to 2010 census. Harris county is situated in Houston, the largest city in the state of Texas, founded in 1836, and was named after John Richardson, one of the early settler of the area, Harris County is made up of 4.1 million populations thus the highest populous county in the state of Texas, and also the 3rd highest populous County in the United States. Harris County was initially known as Harrisburg County in 1836, and the name was changed to Harris County in 1839.
Harris County has a total area of 1,778 square miles (4,605.0km2), and 1,729 (4,478.1km2) is land while 49 square miles (126.9km2) is made up of water according to the United States Census Bureau. The major highways in Harris County include Interstates 10, 45, 69,610 loop, highway 59, 90, 290, 90 alternate, State highways 3,6,99,146,225,249,288 and Beltway 8. Harris County has numerous healthcare industries, public health departments, specialty hospital and clinics.
According to the 2000 census, the population of Harris County was 3,400,578, and the population increased to 4,092,459 in 2010 indicating community growth. 56.6% of which are white American, 33.0% non-Hispanic whites. This population of which 29.00% are under 18 years, 10.3% are between the ages of 18 and 24, 33.4% are between the ages of 25 to 44, 19.8% are between the ages of 45 to 64 and 7.4% are 65 years and older.
