Great Gatsby essay 2003 q 5
The Great Gatsby by F Scott Fitzgerald is a novel about a man who does everything in his power to win over the woman of his dreams. There are many main characters in this novel one of them being a man named Tom Buchanan husband of Daisy Buchanan. In this essay I will look at how the presence of Tom in the novel changes the outcome for Gatsby and overall leads to his death.
Tom Buchanan is a very powerful character. It gives us an idea of the harm that a guy this big could cause to someone. “A cruel body” this suggests that this body has already caused a lot of harm in the past . We also feel sympathetic towards Tom as he dosent seem to be the smartest of people and he lacks concentration and brain power. “there was something pathetic in his concentration” this suggests that he lacked in mental power. The reader feels sorry for him as he dosent seem to think about anything he does. We see him throw his money away left right and center without a care in the world.
Tom wins Daisy back by exposing the truth about Gatsbys wealth and appealing to Daisys weakness and greed. The reader kind off loses sympathy that was felt for Tom as he tells Daisy the truth about Gatsby to win her back. “shes not leaving...
