Higher Learning
The movie that I decide to watch for my Artistic paper is Higher Learning. John Singleton who has written and directed movies that are similar to Higher Learning like Poetic Justice and Boyz In the Hood(Higher Learning n.d.) did a wonderful job depicting the different struggles in college in that time. This movie takes a look at a diverse university and the issues that they might have. By the end of the movie, after all the drama messages are learned and issues have been brought to the table. This movie features many good actors that portray the issues of that time very well. The three main characters in this movie that lives dramatically change for either the better or worse is Omar Epps character Malik Williams, Kristin Swanson’s character, Kristin Connor and Michel Rapaport’s character Remy
Malik Williams is a college student on a track scholarship who at first does not seem to see racial boundaries until he is has more and more interaction with Ice Cube character and his friends and less and less interaction with his roommate and people like his roommate. Malik has two turning points, I think, in the movie. The first turning point, where he turns militant, is when Remy pulls a gun out on him. After that he becomes an extremist and hates all white people. The second turning point is when Tyra Banks character was shot and killed. By the end of the movie he seemed a wiser and more tolerant. I see this because in the beginning of the movie when Malik and Kristin Connor first met on the elevator it was the stereotypical meet. A white girl and a black guy in the elevator, the white girl holds her purse and the black man rolls his eyes at her reaction. At the end of the movie, in the courtyard, they meet again for the second time despite the fact that they are in class together. When he consoles her she doesn’t flinch or act scared.
The second person whose life is drastically changed by college is Kristin Connor. She seems like a middle class girl...
