The Greek physician Hippocrates is known as the father of medicine. He changed the thinking
of Greek medicine with his certainty that disease was not caused by gods or spirits but was the
result of natural action.
Hippocrates was born to a family of physicians on the island of Cos, Greece around 460 BC. He
is believed to be the greatest physician of his time. He based his medical practice on
observations, clinical experience and on the study of the human body. He believed that illness
had a physical and a rational explanation. He dismissed the views of his time that considered
sickness to be caused by superstitions, evil spirits or of the gods.
Son of Heracleides and Praxithea, Hippocrates's family was wealthy allowing him to have a
good education starting at a very early age. He did 9 years of physical education, reading, writing,
spelling, music, singing, and poetry. He then went to a secondary school, where he spent 2 years
and had very comprehensive athletic training. It is likely that he went on to study medicine under
his father in an apprenticeship (arrangement to learn a trade through work experience). Here he
would have to follow his father and other doctors, from patient to patient and observing their
treatment and techniques. It is said that his training included traveling to the Greek mainland and
possibly to Egypt and Libya to study medical practices.
Hippocrates held the belief that the body must be treated as a whole and not in bits and pieces.
He was the first physician to correctly describe the symptoms of pneumonia, as well as epilepsy in
children. He believed in the natural healing process of rest, a good diet, fresh air, exercise and
cleanliness. He also knew that some may not be able to follow directions of a physician and
