For Homeless People
Homelessness has recently become intriguing for me, trying to understand more about the
reasons for homelessness and how to help someone in this situation. Specifically because it has been the demographic I have been working with. Definitions of homeless are multiple; being homeless does not only mean that an individual is living on the street. Being homeless could mean someone is living in a shed and paying rent, however the shed is not equipped for living standards. An individual could also be considered homeless if they are living in a friend’s home because at any time the friend can request the individual leave the home.
Reasons for homelessness vary according to the individual from family conflict, substance abuse, unemployment, low income, mental illness, physical illness, and so on. There is no one reason for homelessness and no one experience for a homeless person. Many homeless individuals live on the street while others live in shelters or with friends. Individuals being homeless are forced to adjust to conditions such as fear of abuse or attack, a need to be constantly alert, extreme weather, lack of a balanced diet, and strained relations with other people. Being homeless can be exhausting while trying to survive, this may keep the person from dealing with the core issues of why they have become homeless.
Services for homeless people range from eviction prevention services, diversion services, shelters, food programs, health care, substance abuse services, mental health services, social services, job-related services, education services for children, legal services, housing, clothing services, hygiene, storage facilities, mail drops, travel support, self-help. Eviction prevention services encourage individuals facing eviction to use public funds in order to protect themselves from illegal eviction.
