Illegal immigration is a controversial topic in this nation. So many of us are directly involved with this issue as we are all immigrants ourselves to American soil, and most of us know of someone who is a recent illegal immigrant. Why do so many people wish to come to the United States, legally or not? Why is it so easy for them to immigrate illegally? What has our government done and what are they doing to control the rate of illegal immigration? Why do some consider illegal immigration to be a problem? Why do others believe it can be a benefit for our country? This paper will explore all of these questions to examine one of the most divisive issues of our generation.

Why do so many people wish to come to the United States, legally or not?
For generation, immigrants have come to the United States to try and better their current living conditions. Today, seventy-five percent of the illegal immigrants that are coming to the United States are from Mexico. This is because 53 percent of Mexico’s residents live in poverty and the unemployment rate in Mexico is at 40 percent with little health care. They tend to move to communities in cities where other immigrants are located. In order to save money on rent, they share rooms with one another. This allows them to maximize their salaries. Even though a lot of them work in unattractive jobs and share rooms, these conditions are far better than the poor conditions of Mexico. Mexicans come to the United States with high expectations, assuming that “the grass will be greener” across the border.
Why is it so easy for them to immigrate illegally?
There are many reasons why access to the United States from Mexico has become prevalent. The Census Bureau estimates that “over 500,000 illegal immigrants enter the United States every year.” Let’s examine why it is so easy to cross the southern border.
