Managing change does not mean managing people’s fear. Managing changes is a way to help people accept the change that is coming without feeling overwhelmed or at least feeling less frustrated. One of the most important things to remember when trying to implement change within the organization is to remember that change in personal, requiring each individual to think, feel, and do things differently. At the end of this paper one should have a better understanding of what management roles are in implementing change, ways they should handle staff resistance to change, and the change process.
It is important that management does not take responsibility for the way people react to change. Management needs to take the responsibility for explaining every aspect of the change, how it will benefit the organization and employees, allow the employees to grieve the loss of the old, providing the necessary resources, including training for the employees to make the change, and provide ongoing support to the employees (Malloch and Porter-O'Grady 2007). Managers must address any concerns, questions, and anticipate employees’ fears; managers can help improve morale during a difficult transition. Building the relationship with employees can also help in this area, as employees will feel more comfortable voicing their concerns if they have a good working relationship with their managers and peers. During the transition of the new change it is very important that there is not a breakdown in communication. Communicating the important information in a timely manner and answering questions will reduce conflicts during the change process. Although some people have a difficult time accepting change with appropriate leadership and attention, managers can help employees with the fear of the change ("Tips For Managing Change, 2007).
