Medicine has seen numerous medical innovations since the early 1900’s. In 1928, penicillin was introduced as the first successful antibiotic agent to treat life-threatening bacterial infections. In 1955, the polio vaccine was created, which almost eradicated the epidemic virus that caused paralysis and death. In 1986, the first coronary stent was placed reducing myocardial infarcts. Breakthroughs, suchas this and many others, are responsible for increased life expectancy rates around the world. According to the US Census Bureau (2010), the average life expectancy in 1950 was 68.2 years and in the year 2011 the life expectancy is 76.3 years of age. As a result, medical workers are providing care to a higher number of elderly populations. Many treatments and medicines sustain and give greater quality of life, however, as the person gets older, the susceptibility to side effects or adverse effects with use of therapeutic regimes may increase. In a July 10, 2009 Nurse Week article titled, “Sedative and Hypnotic Use Linked to Suicide Risk in the Elderly,” the author makes a claim that these medications among seniors are associated with an increased risk of suicide. The article bases its information on a case-control study published in the BMC Geriatrics journal.
According to BMC Geriatrics journal (2009) publication “researchers examined psychotropic drug use in 85 people aged 65 or older who had committed suicide and roughly 150 age and sex matched controls from the underlying population. In fully adjusted analyses, prescription medications for sedatives and hypnotics were each associated with a fourfold risk of increased suicide. “ In this research of 85 suicide cases, many different variables exist.
