1. By the end of this internship, I would like to develop a working knowledge of the methods of accounting used by this firm. I learn by doing, so I believe this experience of working in a hands-on supervised learning environment is going to be an effective tool of learning. I will be able to give accounting principles real life application, which will help me throughout the rest of my academic career. During and after this internship, I plan to use this opportunity to apply, analyze, and build upon the accounting and business concepts that are learned throughout my Lipscomb Accounting curriculum. Seeing the inner-workings of an accounting department will bring life into my accounting classes and study materials.
By the end of this internship, I hope to improve my communication and teamwork skills and also expand my professional network. Securing a full-time job at these times can be difficult. A degree will not guarantee a job at graduation. This time is crucial for me to get ahead of the masses of students on the job search and build strong relationships with successful individuals who can provide me with valuable advice and business knowledge. I plan to gain those professional contacts at the firm by the following steps: to not be afraid of approaching individuals and doing so early on in my internship, to share my career goals and discuss future plans, and to stay in touch with these individuals. Since this internship, I have started a collection of business cards. I write down when and how we met on the back of the business card and keep them together in a planner. I have also started keeping stationary handy and writing thank you letters in a timely manner. I will do this after being treated to lunch by a partner at the firm, for example.
