Past, Present, and Future

I am 40 years old and just started school again for the 4th time of my life and try to finish

a four years degree this time. I did go to college right after high school, but my life did take a

few an expecting turn. My only plans were to finish college after high school and became a

professional soccer player. In this paper, I will try to give a brief outline of my life events and

where I have been for the past, present, and future. I will present some of my life experiences

using what I have learn so far in the adult development theories from this class. These

experiences are what made me the person I am today and will probably dictate what I will

become in the future.

The first ten years of my life were spent in Saigon, South Vietnam where I was born and

raised with two sisters and one brother. In 1978, we fled to escape war and Communism with

hopes of immigrating to America. The journey as boat people after 11 grueling days on the

ocean that led my family to take refuge in neighboring country of Philippine for a year. As we

lived in this country, we had to adjust to new customs. For example, we had to live in a small hut

surrounded by numerous other refugees and survived by eating rice and beans out of small

supply. We struggled to learn their language and put forth our effort to try and interact with

the locals. Over the course of that year, we gradually pick up on a few words and phrases and

learn about the new lifestyle. Although we did missed home and wish to return and visit our

mother country someday, we felt secure because we were away from Vietnam and were

ensured a better life, given that we could not return to Vietnam. It also was a step closer to

reaching the Promised Land we all...
