Sidney-Nature and Art
Poetry is a way to beautify the world. It enables people to express their view of nature, though it may differ from the reality of it. Poetry creates a vision for the reader to see when reading the writer’s prose; enabling the reader to picture what the poet is speaking of and describing. Nature is commonly used in order to express emotion, beauty, events and havens because it is so versatile. For example expressing one’s sadness in losing a loved one one could say, “My heart grew dark and empty, like a meadow before a storm and my tears overflowed like the stream that surrounded it”. Poetry can be very dramatic and help people express feelings that they may not have been able to put into words without using nature to describe the immensity of their feelings. I have chosen to work within the poem The Passionate Shepherd to His Love to best describe how poetry improves on nature and how it uses nature to express emotion and visions of beauty in a way that the human consciousness can accept and appreciate.
Even though the letter that the shepherd had sent to his beloved nymph was not returned in the same warmth the imagery that Marlowe used is a great example of what it means to use poetry in an expression of emotion and desire of beauty. Within the poem Marlowe uses things of nature to try and woo the “nymph” in question who is actually Raleigh, and offers her images of an indistinct place and the wealth that he would adorn her with if she were to come and be his beloved. Within the first two stanza’s he gives the reader a vision of the setting of his affections:
COME live with me, and be my love;
   And we will all the pleasures prove
   That hills and valleys, dales and fields,
   Woods, or steepy mountain yields.

And we will sit upon the rocks,
Seeing the shepherds feed their flocks
By shallow rivers, to whose falls
Melodious birds sing madrigals.
