Abraham Maslow is considered a founding father of humanistic psychology. This humanistic approach is sometimes referred to as the “third force” in psychology. It developed after both the psychoanalytic and behaviorist approaches were well established. Never thinking of himself as a psychotherapist, he focused more on understanding healthy behavior. While living the life of an academic, he spent most of his career teaching, conducting research, and developing theories of behavior. Abraham’s most popular theory is known as, “Maslow’s hierarchy of needs”. His theory of educating the public of healthy functioning and needs being met, has an important influence in subjects like counseling, other helping professions, education, in the business world, and quality of life in other countries.(Psychologists and Their Theories for Students)
In the book “The Further Reaches of Human Nature” on page xvi-xvii, Maslow once said, “We must remember that knowledge of one’s own deep nature is also simultaneously knowledge of human nature”.
