The Outsiders
Chapter 1
Ponyboy Curtis is the main character and narrator of the story. Ponyboy is 14 years old and lives in Oklahoma. He belongs to a group called the greasers. The greasers are a lower-class group and their rivals are the upper-class group called the Socs, which is short for the Socials. Ponyboy is walking home from the movies when a group of Socs gang up on him and threaten to slit his throat. The greasers show up and save Ponyboy. The greasers are: Darry, Sodapop, Johnny, Dally, Two-Bit, and Steve. Darry is raising Sodapop and Ponyboy because their parents died in a car crash. Darry works two jobs and is very strict with Ponyboy. Ponyboy’s other brother, Sodapop, dropped out of school and works part-time at the gas station. Johnny has abusive parents and considers the greasers his family. Dally is the most dangerous greaser and has a criminal record. Two-Bit is the joker of the group who always shoplifts and carries a switchblade. Steve is Sodapop’s best friend and works at the gas station too.
Chapter 2
The next night Ponyboy and Johnny go to the movies with Dally. They sit behind two girls named Cherry and Marcia. The Soc girls invite Ponyboy and Johnny to sit with them during the movie. Two-Bit arrives at the movies and likes Marcia and they share the same sense of humor. Ponyboy tells Cherry the story of how Johnny got beaten up by a group of Socs in a blue mustang 4 months earlier.
Chapter 3
As they walk to Two-Bit’s house after the movie, Cherry and Ponyboy are talking and they realize they have a lot in common, like reading and watching sunsets. Cherry says that the main difference between the Socs and the greasers is that the Socs are very cool and don’t feel anything and the greasers are emotional. Ponyboy feels that the greasers have a hard life while the Socs have money and an easy life. A blue mustang pulls over and Bob and Randy, Cherry and Marcia’s boyfriends, get out of the car. Cherry and Marcia leave...
