Smoking should be banned in Australia as it is the highest cause of lung cancer and a major contributor to birth defects. Smoking not only effects individuals’ physical health but also it contributes to devastating long term effects on people’s mental health. These side effects then have a huge overwhelming impact on their families and friends.
22 year old Sarah, reports her life altering story on smoking: “I started smoking when I was just a teenager, everyone thought it was cool. I only had one or two when hanging out with mates or when I went to a party. About a year ago my gums started to bleed and at first I thought nothing of it, however it got worse. I found out that I had ulcers caused by the chemicals in the cigarettes. Now I am waiting for surgery to remove part of my tongue which has become so severely ulcerated that I can’t eat, my mother often cries when she sees my mouth and has to make special pureed foods for me to try to eat. It is heart wrenching to see my mother cry so much.”
