Organizations come in various forms and dimensions, and the same can be assumed of their project management organizational structures. An organizations structure may benefit or hurt the organizations capacity to attain the project’s accomplishment. Therefore, it is vital for organizations to select the most suitable structure for the management of the project. There are three primary project management organization structures, which include: functional, matrix, and pure project. One of the three structures has their advantages and disadvantages. In this paper all three structures will be compared and contrasted and will discuss the situation in which each structure would be the best method to manage a project team.
The functional organizational structure works best in small organizations. In a functional structure, the organizations are divided into different sections based upon department. For example, under this type of structure, they would allocate distinct divisions for finance, human resources, sales, and marketing. The projects manager’s responsibility is to guarantee suave completing of processes and projects; still, the functional manager has the maximum power and makes the ultimate decision on the project.
The advantages of using this structure include simpler budgeting and cost regulator, superior technical control, professionals can be sorted to share expertise and obligation, elasticity in the use of manpower, interaction means are vertical and well-known, and rapid reaction competence exists, however may be related upon the significances of the functional managers. Some of the disadvantages of a traditional structure incorporate no official authority, the organization may become complicated, and extra lead-time is necessary for consent of decisions, decisions typically support the solidest functional groups and drive and originality are reduced.
