Psychology is immersed in power relations that can enable prevailing ideologies and simultaneously critique and counteract this. Psychology can also act as a just enabler, learning from its mistakes and enable growth and prosperity in society.

This essay will demonstrate how Psychology affects the governmental and subjective and how these 3 aspects are related and intertwined.
Secondly, we will observe how the discipline was used to advocate and advance the ideologies and practices of the apartheid government in South Africa. While also on the other hand, critical strands of psychology emerged in this period that countered the enabling capacity of dominant psychology.
Finally, we will critically discuss possible ways that Psychology could be used towards just ends in South Africa; in a progressive way that cultivates democracy.

Theories and knowledge claims of Psychology

There is a definite correlation between Psychology and the government of individuals, also resulting in a relationship between Psychology and the self-understanding of individuals (Louw, 2002).
The objectives of the discipline are intended to be beneficial for the individual and for society at large. It promotes mental health, self realisation, self esteem, productivity and help for trauma and grievances (Louw,2002)

The way in which these positive objectives are perpetuated and the technologies used is often by people of authority such as politicians, on individuals under their control. Psychology provides and embeds a new type of language and expertise, allowing for new constraints and subjection. (Hook, 2004).

According to Foucalt, these Power and Technologies of subjectivity are practices used by “experts of the soul” to connect authority ideals to the ideals we have for ourselves (Hook, 2004). Psychology is therefore immersed in Power relations rather than being a neutral or solely just discipline.
