Social Influences on behavior
There is a thin line between sanity and insanity because dysfunctions will always exist within society. “The results of Rosenhan’s study are disturbing to the degree that everyone has idiosyncrasies and quirks that could be interpreted as symptomatic of some type of abnormality. The danger, of course, is that as soon as someone labels you with a “diagnosis,” even a lay diagnosis, all of your subsequent actions is interpreted in light of that diagnosis. Thus, as soon as a friend jokes that you are obsessive–compulsive, he will continue to point out manifestations of his “diagnosis” to you” (Kowalski & Westen, 2007, p. 514). However, there are a variety of social influences that effect how people behave and why people engage in particular activities. With this being said, human interaction is one of the most important factors that influences psychology. Human behavior will always reflect social situations.
Race is a factor that influences people socially. The United Sates is the melting pot of the world. Although most people have an idea of their heritage, no one has a pure blood line. Interracial relationships are becoming more common in today’s society. Most of people probably could not image not being able to attend an integrated school, not having friends outside of their race, or choosing who you want to love based on nationally. Racism has existed and still does. There have been many miscegenation laws to ban this from happening. These were state laws that did not allow interracial couples the right to marry, but they have all failed.
In 1967 miscegenation laws were considered unconstitutional in the Supreme Court Case Loving versus Virginia. “Under our Constitution, the freedom to marry, or not marry, a person of another race resides with the individual and cannot be infringed by the State,” wrote Chief Justice Earl Warren during the case.
