Does Standardized Testing Help Our Students?
There are many arguments on whether standardized testing is beneficial in helping children receive a proper education. Many believe that the testing can help teachers with seeing what children need extra help in, or if the teacher needs to focus more in an area of the students education, at the same time there are other people who disagree and think that teachers are spending too much time on drilling information into the students about the tests and not enough energy and resources going into creativity, critical thinking, or outside the box thinking to help them make the best choices on the tests which tend to be multiple choice and really do not require too much thought to get to the correct answer.
History of standardized testing

So let’s look at the history of standardized testing, its origins, and its purposes through history and if it has changed much. The earliest known testing was given to applicants in the 7th century Imperial China. The tests were set up to see if the applicants knew Confucian philosophy. (ProCon)

Then we move to the 18th century where standardized testing was introduced to Boston by Horace Mann and Samuel Gridley Howe. It was a way of providing a single standard by which to judge and compare the output of each school. (ProCon)

Testing was also used at that time to take kids from farming communities and factories and put them into classrooms to hopefully give them a brighter future. As was in Boston testing was easy to do in big groups all at once. (Fletcher)
