According to the document about duarte Barbosa, he was expressing his impression of the Swahili City-States in which related to economic matter; while the document about Olympe de Gouges addresses social status of women in which related to social and political matter. The essay is going to study Barbosa's attitude toward the trading system in India, and de Gouges's perception on women's issues. It also discusses how the portray from these two documents connected to the civilizations and cultures of nowadays society.
Barbosa's descriptions of the towns along the East African coast provide a unique view of the commercial vitality of the people living there. He seems to have impressed by the extensive trade network of the Swahili. They knew how to make great profits and earn much money through the exchange of gold, ivory, and manufacturing goods brought from other places. The city-states traded with inland kingdoms like Great Zimbabwe to obtain gold, ivory, and iron, and a large quantity of ivory could be found all round Sofala as well. Everything had been changed as the Portuguese arrived along the Swahili Coast. The Portuguese attempted to attack the Swahili city-states, although they were not able to gain control and its trading networks, the Swahilis never recovered their glorious trading past. Their invasion seriously destroyed the economy in India. However, Barbosa describes without apology the destruction of many Muslim towns along the coast. The Portuguese made these people captives and took their gold, silver, and other merchandise.
