Some things that occur in an instant of person’s life that is their childhood, can stick with them for an eternity. In the novel, The Help, written by Kathryn Stockett, Skeeter, the main character goes through a series events, that begin in her childhood, that change her actions as an adult. From her maid growing up, Constantine, to her friendships and her enemies, Skeeter’s experiences as a child made her out of the ordinary as an adult.
The first event in Skeeter’s childhood that led her to do what she did as and adult, was having Constantine as a mother figure in her life. Because Skeeter’s parents weren’t a big part of her life as a child, they left their help to raise their daughter. Constantine encouraged Skeeter and gave her confidence. She taught Skeeter that each day she would have to decide wether or not she would listen to what others said about her. She also made Skeeter to believe that she could do what she wanted with her life, “All my life I’d been told what to believe about politics, coloreds, being a girl. But with Constantine’s thumb pressed in my hand, I realized I actually had a choice in what I could believe” (00). Skeeter was greatly affected by the mothering hand of Constantine throughout her childhood.
Skeeter’s relationship with Constantine resulted in a newfangled way of thinking for Skeeter. Rather than looking for a family and kids as soon as she could, Skeeter decided to go to college. She studied to become a writer. After landing a job writing a housekeeping column for the local newspaper, Skeeter seeks the help of Aibileen, her neighbor’s help. If it wasn’t for Constantine’s teaching, Skeeter never would have thought of lookiong for a job. Let alone a job as a writer.
If not for Skeeter getting a job, she would never have met Aibileen. Aiblieen was the only person that Skeeter could have gone to to get information about housekeeping, because Skeeter was a wealthy white women. Wealthy white women in her time didn’t know a thing...
