Abstract—Virtual Reality (VR), or called Virtual Environments (VE) has drawn much attention in the last few years. Since virtual reality technology shows people the infinite variety of possible future development. And meanwhile extensive media coverage causes this interest to grow rapidly. However very few people really know what VR is, what its basic principles and its open problems are. In this paper an overview of virtual reality is presented, followed by basic technical bottlenecks of VR systems combined with its current state of development. Finally, the solutions are discussed, which contains a general introduction and comparison of three-dimensional software development tools as well as model simplification methods.

Introduction


Virtual reality is an artificial environment that is created with software and presented to the user in such a way that the user suspends belief and accepts it as a real environment.


The simplest form of virtual reality is a 3-D image that can be explored interactively at a personal computer, usually by manipulating keys or the mouse so that the content of the image moves in some direction or zooms in or out. More sophisticated efforts involve such approaches as wrap-around display screens, actual rooms augmented with wearable computers, and haptic devices that let you feel the display images.


To date, virtual reality systems require extremely expensive hardware and software and are confined mostly to research laboratories. Various technical problems limit the further development and application of virtual reality technology.
