Below is an essay on "Theres No Place Like Home" from Anti Essays, your source for research papers, essays, and term paper examples.

American society has undergone some drastic changes over the past decades. The concept of family is being redefined. The traditional family, consisting of a father, mother and a few children living happily together in one home, is no longer the norm. Divorce is at an all-time high with one of every two marriages ending in divorce. Fragmental families are left to build new lives and to perhaps establish relationships that bring together a patchwork of people. One of the driving forces behind the redefinition of family is same-sex couples. Same-sex couples have brought about an entire new family dynamic that is being disputed throughout courtrooms all across America. Should the children of a gay or lesbian parent be adopted by the parent’s partner? Children born or adopted into families headed by partners who are of the same sex usually have only one biological or adoptive legal parent. The other partner in a parental role is called the co-parent or second parent. Second parent adoption is an option available to same-sex couples. The National Center for Lesbian Rights originated the concept of second-parent adoption in the mid-1980’s in San Francisco, California, where the first such adoption was granted (NCLR, nclright.org/publications/2ndparentadoptions.htm). Second-parent adoption is a legal procedure that allows same-sex couples to adopt their partner’s biological or adopted children without terminating the first parent’s right as a parent. This new dilemma has created quite a stir in society. Families and children that find themselves in this situation need the stability and security that are provided by having two fully sanctioned and legally defined parents. Denying legal parent status through adoption to co-parents or second parents prevents children from enjoying the legal and psychological security that comes from having two willing, capable, and loving parents.
