Chinese Medicine vs. Western Medicine

Traditional Chinese medicine in contrast to Western medicine both view the human body in different ways. In the western medicine the body is viewed more like a machine. Philosophically in western medicine there is a mind body disconnect, humans are viewed in different aspects material body and nonmaterial mind. Western science measures the body to verify it actually exists, as far as the mind goes not measurable for western science which makes it difficult to scrutinize. Western view of humans in the universe is that humans are disconnected or not affected by natural phenomena, other than things that can be measured i.e. Law of gravity and many other laws of physics. Therefore diseases are treated separately from the individual as whole. Dealing with overall health western medicine primarily focuses on the breakdown of certain body parts/organs, and designing treatment usually after something has happened to the body. For example if you get a cold then by western standards you would need some type of medication to get rid of the disease. In western medicine really there is no emphasis on preventing health conditions from arising.

After examining the western medicine view of the human body, the Chinese have a more complete view of humans on all levels. In Chinese medicine the body is treated as a whole meaning overall health is an intergraded process. For example preventing an illness is key to one’s wellness by Chinese standards. If you do happen to become ill Chinese medicine is designed to put your body back into balance with the energy flow. Also incorporated into Chinese medicine is the view point that all humans everywhere are connected to the universe there is sense of oneness. Types of treatments in Chinese medicine could vary from various herbal remedies to acupuncture or massage body work with acupressure to unblock the channels of chi, and restore your body to its natural balance.
