Would I vote for Abraham Lincoln today?
Since Abraham Lincoln was declared to be the best president of the USA in 1948 poll, similar polls have consistently placed Lincoln among the top presidents in American history. What is often stated is that he saved the Union and perpetuated the nation. But before I answer the question about voting for Abraham Lincoln today it is necessary to answer other ones: What was the situation during Lincoln´s time like? What were the qualities of Abraham Lincoln? And what qualities would he have at the present time?
During Lincoln´s time, people were faced with a crucial ideological conflict within a nation half slave and half free. At the time of the Cold war, people were faced with another crucial ideological conflict within a world half communist and half free. Nowadays it seems there is not any huge ideological conflict any more. Instead of ideology, the problem resides in increasing disinterest in politics and general apathy. This had a huge impact on the recent elections in October, where the voter turnout was very low.
It follows that the social and political situation during Lincoln´s life was very dissimilar to these days. The life in the 19th century was much more difficult then today. There were illnesses; the quality of health care was incomparable with current situation. The living standard differed a lot from today as there is a social state now that assures social security and universal health care. Slavery was enacted in the USA and slaves had no political rights.
The next question is dedicated to Lincoln´s personal qualities. Historians claim that he was humble. His humility very likely came from the hard time of his life. During his childhood, he had a taste of poverty, farm chores, hard work and death of his mother. After he had got married, he had four sons with his wife. Three of them died. The deaths of their sons had profound effects on him.
